Phoenix Hire New General Manager

December 1, 2022

After months of deliberation, the Philadelphia Phoenix are delighted to introduce Matthew Shade as their new General Manager. Shade is a career sports management professional with 15 years of experience working in athletics, wellness, and finance, most notably being the Director of Athletics at William Tennent High School.

The interview process was a challenge for Phoenix leadership. After narrowing a robust field of applicants down to four highly qualified candidates, the decision was in favor of Shade.

“This was a difficult choice," says owner Jeff George. "We were overwhelmed with the quantity and quality of the applicants for the position. From event management to sports medicine to understanding the importance of our fans, Matt brings years of experience in the sports world to the table. We value his vision for the growth of the Phoenix franchise and for the sport of ultimate. Matt also shares our passion for youth sports and our overarching missions are well-aligned. We are excited to bring him on board and take the organization to the next level.”

Although Shade is a relative newcomer to ultimate, he brings enthusiasm and creativity to his new role. "I am excited to become a part of one of the fastest growing sports in America and look forward to bringing leadership’s vision to life. What excites me the most about joining the Philadelphia Phoenix are the initiatives and opportunities geared toward our youth to learn about the game."

Shade takes over as General Manager today, December 1, and his first tasks will be to prepare for the Hotbirds’ open tryouts in February, secure 2023 season partners, and meet his new team.
